Community Assistance Council is the only social service agency physically located in southern Kansas City, Missouri. This can be a priority for those receiving assistance, as many have transportation limitations.
With 40 years of service to this area, the agency has strong community support through area churches, businesses and individuals.
CAC focuses on helping families and individuals achieve self-sufficiency. The goal is to provide more stability and avoid crises to households, resulting in a vibrant and thriving community.
Community Assistance Council has a staff of 2 full time and 4 part time employees and over 70 volunteers that support its many programs. Current volunteer opportunities are available in the food pantry, delivering meals on wheels to homebound senior citizens, and working in “Carol’s Garden” during warm weather months.
Challenges facing the agency include:
Food pantry usage is at capacity for resources—appointments are booked out 4-6 weeks. The agency has seen an increase of 85% in food pantry requests in the past five years. Over $672,000 in food was provided to 4,466 families during this time.
There is a waiting list of over 1,000 households in need of rent and/or utility assistance. In the past year, 230 households received help from CAC for rent/utilities to prevent homelessness.
So why share all this with you? Because Morgan Miller Plumbing has teamed up with CAC to help make the holidays special for those less fortunate and we can’t do it alone! We are collecting gently used clothing and household items, non-perishable food and new, unwrapped toys. When you donate 5 items or more you will receive $20 off your service call. Don’t have any current plumbing needs and just want to donate? Call us, 816-765-4843, and we will gladly come pick up your items. Let’s make an impact in our community, together!
